Glacial Lake Missoula’s Sister Lakes
Did you know that Glacial Lake Missoula was not the only glacial lake that impacted the northern Montana landscape during the Ice Ages? Have you ever heard of Glacial Lake Great Falls or Shonkin Sag?
Don Hyndman, professor emeritus of geology at the University of Montana, gave a public lecture by Zoom on “The Other Glacial Lakes in Northern Montana” on Wednesday, February 24th, at 7:00 pm. This was part of the annual “Cabin Fever” lecture series co-sponsored by the Glacial Lake Missoula Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute and the Montana Natural History Center. Due to covid restrictions, only about 10 members could attend in person, but over 300 were able to sign in on line to view the presentation and ask questions.
Much of the material covered by Dr. Hyndman can be found in the newly released second edition of Roadside Geology of Montana, co-authored with Dr. Rob Thomas of U of Montana – Dillon. For the additional details covered in the lecture, view the recording at Other Glacial Lakes in Montana.
