Ice Age MegaFlood in the Fraser River Valley, B.C., Canada – Dr. John Clague, Simon Fraser University
About 11,500 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, floodwaters up to 100 m deep raced down the Fraser Canyon from south of Williams Lake to present-day Hope. Upon reaching Hope, the flood entered and spread westward across the Fraser Lowland before entering the sea south of Vancouver. In this presentation, I describe the flood and its effects on the landscape, and explain its cause.
John Clague was educated at Occidental College (BA), the University of California Berkeley (MA), and the University of British Columbia (PhD). He worked as a Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada (1975-1998), and as a Professor in Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University (1998-2016). Clague is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, former President of the Geological Association of Canada, and Past-President of Engineers and Geoscientists BC. He was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2020.
