Mapping Dry Falls: A Bird’s-Eye View

Join Wenatchee Valley Erratics for our Meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 6:30 Meet & Greet, 7:00 Presentaion, at the The Wells House:
Mapping Dry Falls: A Bird’s-Eye View of Washington’s Iconic Floodscape featuring Daniel Coe via Zoom.
Dry Falls is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most geologically significant landscapes. Its dramatic, deeply eroded terrain preserves evidence of catastrophic glacial outburst floods on a scale that is almost impossible to imagine.
In 2025, the Washington Geological Survey published an interpretive map which provides a bird’s eye view of the huge landforms at Dry Falls.
Dan will discuss how he and his colleague, Dr. Joel Gombiner, constructed this terrain-based map, and will review the challenges in portraying and interpreting this vast landscape. He will also show several new lidar-based landform visualizations from around our state.
Daniel Coe has been making maps of the Pacific Northwest for the past two decades. He is the graphics editor at the Washington Geological Survey in Olympia where his work explores the geomorphology and natural hazards of Washington State.
When not making maps, he is usually out enjoying the forests and waters of our region. You can see his work at dancoecarto.com
Daniel Coe – Works for Washington State DNR and specializes in: Visual communication of geologic and geomorphic processes, natural hazards, and lidar-based landform visualization.
