IAFI Board Past-President

Gary was a member of the Ice Age Floods Institute since 2001, a founding member of the Cheney-Spokane Chapter, was president of the chapter for five years and was IAFI president from 2013 until just before his death in 2026.

With his B.S. and M.S. in Earth Science and PhD in Soil Science from Montana State University, he mapped over a million acres of glaciated landscapes. He taught university classes, been an extension educator and led Forest Service land management teams, all useful experience in leading the IAFI.

His main goals as president of the IAFI were to continue to “grow” our membership, be sure we tell the floods story accurately to as many groups and individuals as possible, to work with the National Park Service on the development of the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail, and to manage the institute’s human and fiscal resources in the most efficient and transparent manner possible. His contributions have been extremely impactful, valuable and will be enormously long lasting. His leadership and presence are greatly missed and admired.
