Henry Road.  Exit the freeway south on Barker Road\, turn left at the roundabout at Sprague Road\, then right at the three-way junction on Henry Road. \n\nSaltese Uplands Conservation Area hike: 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM\nShort Member meeting: 2:00-2:15 PM\nSpeaker: Glenn Cruickshank (a.k.a.\, Google Earth by Glenn) (beginning after the Member meeting)\n“Dating Erratics — an IAFI-funded project — the results!”\nSynopsis: The Spokane Chapter of the IAFI is partnering with a University of Massachusetts research team to locate and study glacial erratics near the Ice Age Floods breakout zone in North Idaho and eastern Washington. These boulders—stranded high on hillsides as the floods tore through the region—hold important clues about when and where the floodwaters moved. By determining the ages of these erratics\, researchers can better reconstruct the timing and pathways of the cataclysmic events that shaped our landscape.\n\nNote: At present\, we have openings on our chapter board.  Our board meets the second Tuesday of each month from 10 AM- 12 PM at the Cheney Depot in Cheney.  Interested? DESCRIPTION:Northrup Cnyn Flood Deposits\nJoin the Lower Grand Coulee Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute on an outing on a Fall Hike in the Northrup Canyon\, Old Wagon Road Trail\nHike starts at 9:30 am Saturday\, October 24\, 2026 – 2.6 miles RT\, 450 ft elevation gain \nDirections – Take State Highway 17 to Soap Lake. Stay on State Highway 17 for 21 miles north toward Coulee City. \nJust past the Dry Falls Interpretive Center\, turn right (east) on US Highway 2 for 4.4 miles (passing turnoffs to Coulee City). \nAt the “Y” junction\, stay straight to merge onto State Highway 155 toward Electric City and Grand Coulee. \nFrom the US 2-State Highway 155 intersection go 19.2 miles (just south of Mile post 19) to turn right (east) up the hill on a gravel road identified as the Northrup Canyon Road. \nFollow the road 0.5 miles to its end at a locked metal gate where there is a small parking area\, a vault toilet\, and signage. \nA Discover Pass is required.  \nThe trail is closed November 15 through March 15 to protect bald eagle roosting habitat and nesting.\nIt is a historically\, geologically and ecologically unique area. Two different rock types and vegetation zones intermingle. Columbia Plateau basalts and Okanogan Highlands granites are both present in Northrup Canyon having been exposed by glacial activity and by the Missoula floods erosion. Shrub-steppe habitat is adjacent to native pine forest and the trail follows a historic road.

DESCRIPTION:The Lake Lewis Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute will host a chapter meeting and guest lecture with Jim O’Connor\, U.S. Geological Survey – Portland\, Oregon on November 3rd\, 2026. This presentation will round out the 2026 lecture theme as we explore flood stories along the path from ancient Lake Missoula to the Pacific Ocean.  \nStarting with J Harlen Bretz and Ira Williams in 1915\, geologists have been on the trail of the Missoula floods in the Columbia River Gorge. This work continues\, addressing lingering and new questions\, such as how many\, how big\, when\, from where\, and what did they do? Jim will summarize the current state of understanding\, as well as other Columbia River Gorge stories being worked on by the USGS mapping group.\n \nThis event will be hosted at the REACH Museum in Richland\, Washington and is free to the public. Bretz’s groundbreaking work on the Ice Age floods reshaped the scientific understanding of the Northwest—and we think that deserves a celebration. \nWe’re still shaping the details\, but expect a relaxed\, community‑friendly event that highlights the Bretz legacy and the remarkable landscapes he helped the world understand.
