LECTURE: Columbia River Gorge & Ice Age Floods – 50 Million Years of Geologic Tumult
1810 N Greene St
Spokane, WA 99217
USA
OPEN AND FREE TO THE PUBLIC. You will enjoy this presentation by Lloyd DeKay, president of the Columbia River Gorge Chapter. The current stunning beauty of the Columbia River Gorge region belies its tumultuous geological history that spans about 50 million years of volcanic arc eruptions, massive fissure eruptions of flood basalts, more arc volcanism, catastrophic sediment-saturated Ice Age Floods, huge landslides, and massive earthquakes. We will review that tumultuous geologic history with examples of some of the geologic wonders and beauty resulting from that tumult.
DeKay bio: After a degree in geological Oceanography and 27 years of international oil exploration for Gulf/Chevron, Mr. DeKay returned in retirement to the Columbia River Gorge where he had performed geologic investigations for siting the Bonneville Dam 2nd powerhouse in 1976. Then the president of the Columbia River Gorge Chapter talked him into leading the local IAFI field trips and presentations that still continue to teach him about the wonderful area he now lives in. He is deeply involved in the IAFI Board as well as numerous other enterprises and community organizations in the Gorge. He lives with his wife, Lorrie, in White Salmon, WA and they have two daughters living in South Carolina and Connecticut, respectively.
