Steve Carlson leads a day expedition to follow the geology trail seen by Lewis and Clark to Cape Disappointment, Saturday, April 29. Meet at 7:45 a.m. at the front entrance of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, 5000 Discovery Drive.
The Earth Science Rocks! geology tour will visit Cape Disappointment and Lewis and Clark National Park on the Washington Coast. Study the effects of the 1701 tsunami, hike on the Lewis and Clark State Park beach, see pillow lavas that were extruded on the Pacific seafloor 40 million years ago. Measure beach slope, erosion and ocean processes. Visit Long Beach and hike the trail of Lewis and Clark. The return trip will take you through the Cowlitz River area to see the evidence of the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Anticipated return time is 6:30 p.m.
Carlson is a Northwest native and a retired professor of geology. As an excursion leader, he is enthusiastic, informed and will bring new understanding to the fascinating geology of the Pacific Northwest.
